Superman
I watched the 1978 Superman movie last evening. The first time I saw it I was probably 6. The movie has amazing special effects and one can say that even after watching the likes of “Terminator 2” and superb photography in say “War of the worlds”. I found the the earthquake sequence wherein the Hoover dam collapses and the destruction of the Golden Gate bridge very impressive. Having gotten a li’l curious about the special effects that could have been used nearly three decades ago before the use of computer technology in film making, I decided to do some superficial research on the subject from the superman website. I learnt that miniatures of Hoover dam and Golden gate bridge were constructed and destructed and the ofcourse the destruction was filmed. The miniature of Golden gate bridge seems to have been 70 feet long and 20 feet wide!
PS : some trivia – since Marlon Brando did not believe in memorizing lines, his lines were written on cue cards and in the scene where he places the baby Kal El in the rocket, the lines were on the baby’s diaper.
